Barmy Army - Gotta Love 'Em...

England's most famous group of supporters, the Barmy Army, have decided that no level of humiliation is too much for the Aussies. They've hired an open-top bus and intend to tour through Sydney tomorrow, crossing the Sydney Bridge and finishing at the Prime Minister's residence!

Needless to say, I look forward to the reaction of our Aussie cousins with relish - though I'm sure they'd say that they couldn't give a 4X.

I'd be satisfied.

But if this came out:

I'd be properly pissed.

I clearly don't understand the sport.

A post-race interview with Marlon Devonish (100m sprinter), coming after he finished a disappointing 6th in a rubbish time, produced this excuse: "I think I was trying too hard".

Well......no. Hate to apply logic and common sense to your thinking but, if you tried a little less hard, then you would have....well, finished 7th. I'm no coach, but my advice would be 'how about trying a little harder'.

Of course, before that we had the sight of our sole female representative in the women's 100m trail in 8th. Now, those of you who remember footballer Jason Lee will be familiar with the pineapple hairstyle. This girl had more-or-less the same thing - one Alice band, then curly verticality. Again, not a look associated with sprinters taking it seriously as it's not exactly aerodynamic, is it? If how fast you raise your head can affect your speed severely, then having a bloody tropical fruit rising up from your head must be a calamity when it comes to wind resistance.

First, the good:

Simply the funniest piece of audio commentary ever. For those familiar with it, it's the 'Stop it Aggers' clip.

Now, the bad. Summed up in one phrase:

"Taxi for Strachan".

Finally, the ugly. Have heard about the plight of 18 year-old Liverpool fan Michael Shields who has been jailed for 15 years on an attempted murder charge in Bulgaria - a crime he didn't commit and to which the person who actually did it has now confessed to upon return to this country (for more info, see http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N149483050727-1109.htm).

Yet, according to a member of the fan's family on talkSport this morning, Jack Straw is refusing to get involved and the British Embassy in Bulgaria have been woeful. The whole situation stinks to high heaven - apparently the person who has now admitted to it was actually taken in for questioning by the Bulgarian police, then returned a few hours later when this poor lad was arrested. No ID parade either. Of course, a stupid person not being aware of the libel laws may suggest hints of bribery and corruption on behalf of the police service there. Not something I'd say, of course...

Please folks, go and sign the thing and get any friends you have to do the same. We've all got differences over our football teams but imagine if this was one of us or our family who'd travelled abroad for a game.
